Love, every ray of light_電影永生樹

我美麗的朋友,

          

There are two ways through life … the way of Nature… and the way of Grace.

You have to choose which one you'll follow.

這是名導演Terrence Malick的作品《Tree of Life 永生樹》電影開頭的口白，傍晚當我注視著晚霞的天空時，我想起了這段話。

Grace doesn't try to please itself. Accepts being slighted, forgotten, disliked. Accepts insults and injuries.

Nature only wants to please itself. Get others to please it too. Likes to lord it over them. To have its own way. It finds reasons to be unhappy... when all the world is shining around it... when love is smiling through all things.

They taught us that no one who loves the way of grace... ever comes to a bad end.

我一直覺得這段話是值得咀嚼的，非關宗教。

這位導演的作品向來是難以用言語形容的，所有詩意般的蒙太奇、豐富意象的堆疊與隱喻，都是只能感受，不好言傳的。他超過四十二年的影壇人生，至今卻只有六部作品，我看過三部，另外兩部是《The Thin Red Line 紅色警戒》、《To the Wonder 愛‧穹蒼》，都是相當深刻的作品。當然，我不是影評，也從未意圖去評論，我喜歡的是看電影不解釋。

然而它想表達的還是用一種斷續的方式說了: (摘自電影)

嚴厲的父親Mr. O'Brien:(Brad Pit飾)說著:

You make yourself what you are. You gotta control your own destiny. Can't say 'I can't'. You say I'm having trouble, I'm not done yet. You can't say 'I can't'.

It takes fierce will to get ahead in this world.

Don't let anyone tell you there's anything you can't do

溫柔的母親Mrs. O'Brien (Jessica Chastain)則說著:

Love everyone. Every leaf. Every ray of light.

The only way to be happy is to love. Unless you love, your life will flash by.

Do good to them. Wonder. Hope

對我來說，這並非只是兩個故事角色的價值觀，而是同時並置在我心思裡時常同時出現的兩種聲音。

妳也會嗎?

電影裡的長子Jack長大後成為了一位事業有成的建築師(Sean Penn飾)，然而他卻深感自己迷失了，失魂地行走在現代化玻璃帷幕的大樓裡，畫面中一連串當代建築語彙的跳接，看地我可真是心有戚戚。

電影的最後，Jack這麼說道:   I wanted to be loved because I was great. A big man. I'm nothing. Look--the glory all around us, trees, birds. I dishonored it all and didn't notice the glory. A foolish man.

是呀，多麼愚蠢呀我。

Unless you love, your life will flash by
